This is our review of the best exercise machines for toning your whole body.
When it comes to body toning, there is no one-size-fits-all machine that can target all your muscle groups.
Instead, there are different types of equipment that can target multiple muscles simultaneously. Equipment such as rowing machines, elliptical machines, indoor air bikes, treadmills, and weights.
As a personal trainer, I recommend doing both power and cardio training. Power training builds muscle strength, while cardio training helps burn fat. You don’t want to neglect either one of them.
In this article, I explain the benefits of each type of equipment and why they are great for muscle toning. Additionally, I listed my recommendations for each type.

Sunny Health & Fitness
Magnetic Rowing Machine
Rowing is one of the best exercises for toning your body. The Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine is the most affordable rower in our list. It is quiet, foldable and you can use it with the SunnyFit App.
If I had to choose one exercise machine, it would be the rowing machine. This exercise targets 85 percent of your body’s muscles and burns fat faster than any other exercise.
But, if you’re not a fan of rowers, there are other options for you.
Now, let’s look at my recommendations.

16 Best Exercise Machine For Toning Your Whole Body
Rowing Machine
When it comes to toning your entire body, nothing beats a rowing machine.
Although you may think that rowing only works your arms, it is actually a full-body workout that targets your upper body as well as your lower body.
The American Fitness Professionals Association estimates that the rowing stroke requires 65–75% leg work and 25–35% upper body work. Additionally, rowing targets 85% of your body’s muscles [1] and burns fat faster than any other exercise. According to Harvard Health Publishing, a 155-pound person can burn over 730 calories per hour while rowing at a vigorous pace.
This is why you will feel your entire body burning after just one session.
Take a look at these rowing machines.

Hydrow uses magnetic resistance, which means it provides a smooth and quiet rowing experience. So if you want a virtually silent rower, then go for magnetic rowers like Hydrow.
The Hydrow rower is a computer-guided rowing machine that offers resistance based on how hard you pull the handle.
But what makes this machine truly unique is its wide range of resistance (from 0 to 300), which you can adjust digitally. You can change the difficulty of your exercise to match your fitness level or mood. You can also change resistance levels mid-workout if needed.
Hydrow is perfect for you if you are a beginner who needs instruction or wants to work out, but doesn’t want to feel like you’re doing it alone. With Hydrow’s class-based workouts, all you have to do is find the one that works best for you, and follow along with the instructor.
Hydrow features scenic views of waterways, which are sure to inspire you and keep your mind occupied while you work out.
However, if budget is a consideration, then go for budget-friendly magnetic rowers like Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine. Hydrow is expensive and needs a lot of floor space. Still, Hydrow is an excellent body toning machine.

Concept2 is a rowing machine that uses air resistance to simulate the experience of rowing on water. Air-powered rowers are louder by nature, so Concept2 is louder than Hydrow.
This rowing machine has ten resistance settings, which you can manually adjust using the damper setting on the side. Unlike Hydrow, which has instructor-led programs, Concept2 gives you the freedom to set your own pace and goals.
The RowErg has a PM5 monitor that stores repeatable and comparable data for every workout. This means you can compare your performance from one workout to the next, and see how you’re improving over time.
You can log your workouts with the Concept 2 Logbook, where you can join their online community and compete against others who use the same machine. So if you want interaction with other users, go for Concept 2 RowErg.
With the Concept2 RowErg, you have two height options. You can choose a 14″ seat height, which is excellent for shorter users. Or you can select the elevated version with taller legs that provide a 20″ seat height.
Concept 2 is significantly cheaper than Hydrow, so I recommend Concept 2 for you if the noise is not an issue. Concept2 is also a great option if you have limited space at your home. You can separate it into two parts for easy storage.
Ergatta Rowing Machine
Features | Ergatta Rower |
Dimensions | Length: 86 in (218.44 cm) Width: 23 in (52.42 cm) Height: 40 in (101.6 cm) |

Warranty | 5-year warranty on the structural frame 3-year warranty on all parts 1-year warranty on the touchscreen 30-day trial period |
Additional Features | Bluetooth WiFi Speakers |
The Ergatta Rower uses water resistance to simulate the feel of rowing on the water. This is another option if you want a silent rowing machine, though magnetic rowers are quieter. The sound of water while you row is meditative.
The Ergatta is an indoor-rowing machine that makes rowing fun and competitive. It has a game-like interface that gives you a competitive rowing experience. Ergatta has missions that you must finish before moving on to the next level.
When you’re ready to start rowing, you can calibrate the Ergatta by doing your first 2000-meter row. The machine will automatically adjust to your fitness level and tailor a personalized workout for you.
So if you love challenges and competition, this is the rower for you.
Just like Hydrow, Ergatta is also a significant investment in your home because it is expensive. However, it is easier to store than Hydrow because you can store it upright, and have transport wheels for mobility.
WaterRower A1 Home Rowing Machine
Features | WaterRower A1 Home Rowing Machine |
Dimensions | Length: 83.5 in (212 cm) Width: 22.25 in (57 cm) Height: 20 in (51 cm) |
Monorail Length | Not Specified Inseam length: Fits up to a 39-inch inseam |

Maximum User Weight | 275 lbs. |
Resistance | Water |
Noise Level | Quiet |
Material | Ash hardwood and Aluminum |
Storage | Can be stored upright |
Warranty | 5 years for frame 3 years for parts |
Additional Features | Siphon Pump Chlorine Tablets |
Just like Ergatta, WaterRower uses water for resistance. However, WaterRower is less expensive. So this is a great option if you have a tight budget, but want a water rower.
The Water Rower has an A1 Quick-Start LCD monitor that displays your metrics, such as stroke rate and distance. The weight limit is 275 lbs, which is enough to cater to most users.
Upon purchase, you will get a hand siphon pump for adding or draining the water, and chlorine tablets to prevent water discoloration.
Unlike other resistance types, which you can easily adjust with just a touch of a button. For water rowers, you can adjust the resistance to your liking by adding or draining water from the container. If you want more resistance, add more water to the tank. If you want less resistance, drain some water out of the tank. This may give you a hassle from time to time.
Some people choose their equipment based on how it will look in their homes. So if you are like them, water rowers are great for you, because the frame is usually made of wood, which gives the rowers a luxurious look.
Since Water Rower is cheaper than Ergatta, you will miss out on features like personalized workout programs. But, if you want the freedom to do your workout at your own pace, this is a great option.

If Concept 2 or WaterRower is still out of your budget, then consider the Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine. This is the most affordable rower on this list. Just like Hydrow, it uses magnetic resistance, so it is quiet to use.
With an easy-to-adjust resistance knob, you can alter the intensity of your workout to eight different levels. The machine’s sliding seat is 48 inches long, so it can accommodate rowers of nearly any size—whether you are short or tall.
The machine has a foldable design, so you can store it out of the way when you’re not using it. Also, it has built-in transportation wheels, which makes it easy to move around.
Just like Concept 2 and WaterRower, the Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine does not have programmed workouts. So you have the liberty to set your routine however you like.
However, should you decide to try instructor-led workouts, you can access the SunnyFit App, where you can watch exercise videos with or without equipment.

Elliptical Cross Trainer
The elliptical machine is a must-have body toning machine. It’s a low-impact machine that allows you to burn fat and tone muscles by moving your arms and legs in various combinations [2].
When you work out on an elliptical machine, you’re working both your lower body and upper body at the same time. Elliptical machines use resistance from a flywheel—similar to how an exercise bike works—to give you the resistance needed to help you exercise.
When you use a cross trainer, you work on the following muscle groups [3]:
- Hamstrings
- Glutes
- Quadriceps
- Calves
- Arms
- Chest
- Back
- Core

Schwinn 430 Elliptical lets you get an effective workout and tone your muscles while burning fat.
This elliptical machine uses a high-speed, high inertia drive system to give you easy start-up and quiet workouts. It also offers a manually adjustable ramp that allows you to change the incline of your workout and challenge yourself in different ways.
And if you really want to try and push your limits, there are 20 levels of computer-controlled resistance to choose from. So no matter what kind of workout intensity you’re looking for, this machine has got you covered.
If you need guidance for your exercises, there are 22 preset exercise programs available for you. The program caters to all fitness levels, so whether you are a beginner or not, you can still find the exercises beneficial and challenging.

If Schwinn 430 Elliptical is too expensive, you can go for Sunny Health & Fitness Elliptical Machine Cross Trainer.
Since it is cheaper than Schwinn 430 Elliptical, Sunny Health & Fitness Elliptical Machine Cross Trainer has fewer resistance (8 levels of magnetic resistance) and no preset programs. However, this elliptical is still functional because it has all the essential features.
This body toning machine gives you a smooth complete body workout without too much impact on your knee joints. It allows you to focus on your form while improving your strength and cardiovascular endurance over time.
You can monitor your heart rate using the pulse sensor on the handle. This is an important tool for exercising efficiently. If you don’t watch your pulse rate, you could be over-exerting yourself or not working hard enough.
This brand is also a great option if your space is limited. Sunny Health & Fitness Elliptical Machine Cross Trainer covers a smaller floor space than Schwinn 430 Elliptical.

Indoor Air Bike
Air bikes are like elliptical machines—they have handles that target your upper-body muscles while you pedal with your lower body.
An air bike is unique in that it uses a fan to create resistance. The harder you pedal, the more the fan will push back. This creates an intense workout that will help you get into shape quickly and effectively.
When you ride an air bike, you can target these muscles [4]:
- Calves
- Hamstrings
- Quadriceps
- Shoulders
- Biceps
- Triceps
Let’s look at some air bikes.
Rogue Echo Bike
Features | Rogue Echo Bike |
Material | Steel |
Dimension | Length: 58.88 in (149.55 cm) Width: 29.88 in (75.90 cm) Height: 52.75 in (134 cm) |
Weight | 127 lbs (57.7 kg) |
Maximum User Weight | 350 lbs (158.8 kg) |
Display | LCD screen outputs: Time Watts Distance Calories Interval Training Heart Rate |
Drive Method | Belt-driven |
Warranty | 2-year frame and parts |
If you’re interested in air bikes, consider trying the Rogue Echo Bike.
The Rogue Echo Bike uses a belt mechanism for its drive system. This means you won’t have to worry about chains or cables getting tangled up in your way as you get in a workout—a common problem with other bikes.
You’ll also find the Echo Bike is very quiet compared to other air bikes because of its drive system. The Echo Bike’s frame is bulky and heavy, giving it added stability and strength. So if you have limited space at home, the echo bike may not be for you.
The Echo Bike has a weight capacity of 350 pounds, enough to cater to most users. The bike has a large seat that you can adjust to fit your body type, making it more comfortable when using it over an extended period. This bike will suit you if you are tall, because the handles are high and wide.
Since the belt-driven bike is more responsive than chained bikes, the echo bike does not record the so-called “Ghost Calories.” Ghost riding is a phenomenon in which you let the air bike keep moving after you stop pedaling, so you gain extra calories with no effort. This phenomenon is commonly observed in chain-driven bikes like the Assault bike.
If you are a fan of the CrossFit Games, I recommend the Rogue Echo Bike for you. Assault Bikes was the brand of bike used at CrossFit before. However, Echo bike replaced it just recently.
And since Rogue Echo Bike requires little to no maintenance, you can focus on your workout instead of fussing over the equipment.
Schwinn Airdyne AD8
Features | Schwinn Airdyne AD8 |
Material | Steel |
Dimension | Length: 53 in (134.6 cm) Width: 26.5 in (67.30 cm) Height: 53 in (134.6 cm) |
Weight | 113 lbs (51.3 kg) |
Maximum User Weight | 350 lbs (159 kg) |
Display | LCD console screen outputs: Calories Watts Time Distance Speed RPM Heart Rate |
Drive Method | Belt-driven |
Warranty | 3 years parts & labor |
If the Echo Bike is too bulky for you, Schwinn Airdyne AD8 is a must-try. Like the Echo Bike, Schwinn Airdyne AD8 uses a belt mechanism for its drive system. It’s much smaller than the Echo Bike, but is more expensive.
The Schwinn Airdyne has a frame made from anti-corrosion, powder-coated steel. The coating protects the structure from sweat and water to ensure it will last a long time.
The multi-position hand grips and seat and height adjustment make it easy to adjust the bike to match your physique.
This indoor bike has built-in telemetric heart rate technology, so you can monitor your heart rate while you ride. You’ll never have to guess if you’re working hard enough or not.
You can also track your workout data through the LCD display. It shows you metrics such as calories, watts, time, distance, speed, RPM, and heart rate.
Like the Echo bike, Schwinn Airdyne is quiet when used and requires little maintenance.
Assault Bike Classic
Features | Assault Bike Classic |
Material | Steel |
Dimension | Length: 50.95 in (129.41 cm) Width: 23.34 in (59.28 cm) Height: 50 in (127 cm) |
Weight | 95.64 lb (43.38 kg) |
Maximum User Weight | 300 lbs (136.08 kg) |
Display | LCD screen outputs: Time Watts Distance Calories Interval Training Heart Rate |
Drive Method | Chain Driven |
Warranty | 5-year frame2-year non-wear parts. |
If you prefer the traditional chain-driven bikes, Assault Bike is for you. Assault Bike is more affordable than the Rogue Echo Bike and the Schwinn Airdyne AD8. However, as I mentioned, Assault Bike Classic is louder due to chain friction and vibration.
Additionally, pedaling in an Assault Bike is harder than on a Rogue Echo Bike or the Schwinn Airdyne AD8 because the belt system is more responsive than the chain.
AssaultBike’s onboard programs provide various calorie-burning and muscle-toning workouts. You can choose from seven programs or create your own workout based on calories, distance, time, or heart rate.
Assault Bike Classic has a low and narrow handlebar that fits most people with average height. So this bike will definitely fit you if you are short.
To keep your Assault Bike in good condition, you must oil and clean the chain periodically, and ensure it is properly aligned.
Assault Bike Classic has a small footprint that makes it easy to store at home without taking up much space. If you want a bike with great features at an affordable price, Assault Bike Classic is one of the best choices for you.
Marcy Exercise Upright Fan Bike
Features | Marcy Exercise Upright Fan Bike |

Maximum User Weight | 300 lbs (136.08 kg) |
Display | LCD screen displays: Time Speed Distance Calories |
Drive Method | Belt-driven |
Warranty | 2 year limited warranty |
If the other bikes are still too expensive for you, then Marcy Exercise Upright Fan Bike might fit your budget. This bike is low-cost and easy to use, making it perfect if you are a beginner looking to get in shape without spending much money on gear.
The Marcy Exercise Upright Fan Bike is an inexpensive option that still has all the features you need to get a solid workout. It’s got a supportive seat and handlebars that let you adjust your position to support your body throughout the exercise. Plus, it has a fan that keeps you cool while you work out.
Like Echo Bike and Airdyne, Marcy Exercise Upright Fan Bike uses a belt mechanism, which means it’s smooth and silent. This is an excellent feature if you want to use your bike for exercise at home without disturbing anyone else in the house.

Treadmill
Treadmills are the most popular piece of workout equipment, and for good reason. Treadmills primarily work your lower body and cardiovascular system. They can also be helpful if you are recovering from an injury or surgery [5].
When running on a treadmill, you can target the following muscles [6]:
- Hamstrings
- Quadriceps
- Calves
- Glutes or Gluteus Muscles

This treadmill has 20 preset programs, studio classes, and trainer-led exercises. So regardless of your fitness level or running experience, there is a workout program for you.
You have enough room to move around on this treadmill, because it has a 22″ x 55″ running surface, which fits the recommended length for runners. The cushioning system delivers a smooth ride and helps reduce joint stress during your workout.
If you want to run faster or sprint, it’s possible with this machine, because the speed range goes from 0.5 mph to 10 mph. The incline ranges from 0 to 10°, so you can use it in various settings to meet your fitness goals.

Other Features | Hand Pulse Sensors Accessory Tray Cup Holder Transportation Wheels |
Warranty | Lifetime Frame 1 Year Motor 90 Days Deck 90 Days Parts 90 Days In-Home Labor |
The XTERRA Fitness TR150 is another option if the NordicTrack is too expensive for you.
Like NordicTrack, this treadmill has a speed range of 0 to10 mph, cushioned deck and a foldable design. However, since this treadmill is cheaper, it has lesser workout programs (12 preset programs) and features only 3 manual incline settings.
The running surface is also shorter. The shorter deck size fits the recommended length for walking, but you might be able to run here if you have short legs. If you are tall, the deck length may not be long enough for running. Additionally, XTERRA Fitness TR150 has a lower weight limit also (250 lbs).
This treadmill is comparable to the NordicTrack, but less expensive. So it might be a better fit for your budget if the features I mentioned suit your needs.

Weights
One of the effective ways to tone your body is through resistance training. You can practice resistance training with free weights like dumbbells and barbells, but you can also do it with resistance bands or machines.
If you’re just starting out, I recommend starting with weights because they’re easy to use (and cheap!).
Depending on your routine, your training should target the following muscle groups [7].
- Chest
- Back
- Legs
- Shoulders
- Biceps
- Triceps
- Trunk/core

Y-bells look nothing like your traditional dumbbell. Each Y-bell is coated with neoprene and has four grips: three outer and one center grip.
The Y-bell’s 4-in-1 functionalities are the following:
- The outer grip, similar to a kettlebell, allows you to do exercises like squats and deadlifts.
- The center grip balances the weight, allowing you to use it as a dumbbell.
- The two outer grips enable you to perform double-grip medicine ball exercises.
- To mimic a push-up stand, you can use the two outer grips as a base and use the top grip as a handle.
The Ybell Arc Series is also easy to store—you can use one of the grips to hang them on a hook.

What To Look For In The Best Exercise Machine For Toning Whole Body?
Targeted Muscles
The best body toning machine should target all specific muscles or muscle groups you plan to strengthen and tone. In this case, a full-body workout machine.
For complete body toning, rowing machines are your best bet.
Resistance
Resistance is integral to any workout, especially when toning your muscles.
Look for an exercise machine with adjustable resistance settings to customize your workout’s intensity. The higher the resistance, the more difficult your muscles have to work to move the equipment.
If you are a beginner, low resistance levels are often best because they allow you to ease into exercise without risking injury.
If you’ve been doing regular workouts for some time now, high-resistance machines will help keep your body from plateauing—which happens when you stop seeing results from your activities because your body gets used to them. They allow you to keep challenging yourself so that you can still continue seeing results.
Cardio Apparatus
Cardiovascular health is important too. Many people overlook cardio training when they focus on muscle-building exercises. Cardio helps keep your heart healthy and strong while also burning calories.
Cardio apparatus like treadmills are great for improving cardiovascular health, which helps lower blood pressure and improves circulation.
Cardio workouts help prepare your body for vigorous training such as muscle toning exercises.
Weight Capacity
The weight capacity of the machine should be more than your weight. Otherwise, it will not be able to support your weight and break down prematurely.
Price and Warranty
You should also take into consideration the budget you have when looking at these products. There are many different types available—some are cheaper than others—and each offers its benefits and disadvantages according to its price point.
If you have a tight budget, the best possible solution is to buy a versatile machine. That way, you can use it for several exercises—not just for muscle toning.
The machine should also come with a warranty that covers damage from use in case something goes wrong when you are using it. Most exercise machines come with warranties that range from one year to five years. You can find some machines that have lifetime warranties as well.
